The Bristol County District Attorney's office announced that Daniel Carvalho, 53, pleaded guilty to a multi-count indictment

FALL RIVER — A city man will serve up to 12 years in prison after carjacking and assaulting a pair of elderly sisters a day after robbing a laundromat.

The Bristol County District Attorney's office announced that Daniel Carvalho, 53, pleaded guilty to a multi-count indictment, charging him with breaking and entering during the nighttime, larceny from a building, carjacking, assault and battery on a person over 60, and two counts of being a habitual offender. Carvalho was sentenced to serve seven to 12 years in state prison

Carvalho had been accused of carjacking and assaulting the sisters in the parking lot at the Price Rite on Pleasant Street on July 7, 2017. Carvalho forcefully grabbed the car keys from the 69-year-old driver while she was getting out of the car. He then ordered the driver's 61-year-old sister out of the car and when she refused, a woman with Carvalho repeatedly punched her in the head.

When arriving Fall River police encountered the defendants in the vehicle. Both Carvalho and the woman, identified as Evelyn Frederick, 48,  were placed under arrest without incident. Frederick was sentenced this past January to serve two-and-a-half years to four years in state prison for her role in the crime.

The day before, Carvalho broke into the Fall River Express Laundry and stole cash.

“This defendant is a career criminal who committed a very violent office while in his early 50s,” District Attorney Thomas Quinn said. “The only alternative to protect society is the lengthy state prison sentence imposed by the court in this case.”
