Prime Minister Theresa May has been taking in the sights of North Wales during the Easter holidays - and she even found time to fit in some shopping.

Mrs May visited an arts and craft shop in Dolgellau this afternoon with her husband Philip with the pair picking out a number of Welsh hand-crafted items.

She bought a Celtic ring made by Barmouth jeweller Anna Hicks, Welsh slate coasters from Matt Fletcher of Set in Stone, cufflinks by Tony Vine of StoneTones, a small jug by Tyr Pinder, a painted box by Tish Bartlett, and honey from Trees and Bees when she popped into Celf Aran Arts in Dolgellau.

The co-operative shop, which consists of 16 artists who exhibit their work in Ty Simas in Eldon Square, is reported to be a favourite spot of the Prime Minister.

Alan Poole of Red Kite Art, Glass and Restoration said the special visit was very “relaxed”.

He told the Daily Post: “We knew the Prime Minister was in the area and at about half past two today a couple of guys came in and had a good look around and we figured something was going on. “Then two people came in wearing weatherproofs and one of them was the Prime Minister.

“She spent about 15 minutes in the shop and looked around and my wife Erica showed her some jewellery and she tried on some pieces including some quite bulky rings.

“She ended up buying quite a few things including a ring from Anna Hicks at Celtic Treasure and some honey from Arthog just down the road. She also picked up some slate coasters from Matt Fletcher which she had requested in advance.

“She seems to have an eye for Welsh slate having bought some coasters last year. She also bought some steampunk cufflinks which had some nice cogs and gears on and a hand-painted box.”

The shop sells a number of items including paintings, jewellery, textiles, ceramics, slate, glass, photography, leatherwork and woodwork.

It is not the Tory leader’s first visit to the shop as she bought two silver rings from Anna Hicks and coasters from Matt Fletcher last year too.

Mrs May is on a walking holiday in Gwynedd and yesterday attended an Easter service at St Mary’s Church in the town.

“She passed up on one of my mirrors as it was too big but I suppose I do know where she lives so I could send her one.” Mr Poole joked.

“We were half expecting the Prime Minister to pop in during her stay as we are one of her favourite spots.

“She was very pleasant and it was all very relaxed while she had a thorough browse and I had a good conversation with her husband about the weather and what a great place we live in.”

It is understood that Mrs May will return to her Maidenhead constituency later this week.
