Protesters try to picket IT offices

62 members of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam arrested

PUDUCHERRY

Sixty two persons, including two women belonging to the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam and other Tamil outfits, were arrested when they attempted to picket the office of the Income-Tax Department on Mahatma Gandhi Road demanding setting up of the Cauvery Management Board by the Centre in compliance with the February 16 verdict of the Supreme Court on the issue.

Procession taken out

The protesters led by Logu Ayappan, president of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam,took out a procession to picket the office. However, the police had barricaded the road. At one stage, some of the activists climbed over the barricades. They were rounded up and arrested.

Mr. Ayappan said the Centre had been showing disrespect to the Supreme Court verdict by delaying the formation of the board. He said that his party would picket the entrance to all the Union government offices in Puducherry demanding constitution of the Cauvery Management Board.
