MANGALURU: It was a poignant moment for
Gladys D’Souza, who was celebrating her centenary, to see her daughter
Glorio Lobo, 75, collapse and pass away during the momentous event. The incident happened at
Nympha Sadan, a senior citizens’ home near Rosario Cathedral, Bolar, on Monday.
The tragic news has not been conveyed to Gladys, who was born during World War I and married during WW II. Her eldest daughter Gloria was probably unable to contain the excitement of the occasion, and coupled with health issues, collapsed and was later declared dead. Gloria, who lives in Canada, had come down with her daughter Liza and brothers Trevor and Christopher D’Souza for the celebrations.
Gloria had taken part in cutting the cake and delivered an emotional speech and poem in honour of her mother. The celebrations started at 11am and around noon, the tragedy unfolded. The body of Gloria may be taken to Canada.
Gladys, born on March 30, 1918, in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar), studied at Good Sheppard Convent School there. She married Joachim Lawrence D’Souza (1905-54), a marine engineer, on December 29, 1942. They moved out of Burma to Kolkata in the mid-1950s. After her husband’s death, she taught at Don Bosco School, Park Circus, Kolkata, for some years and later devoted all her time to her children. Gladys has been living at Nympha Sadan in
Mangaluru since 2008 as she was not comfortable with the climate in Canada and US.
