Freedom fighter and veteran socialist leader Bhai Vaidya died today in a private hospital here. He was 89.
Vaidya, who was suffering from pancreatic cancer, was admitted to the hospital two days ago.
Born on June 22, 1928, in Pune district, Vaidya was the president of Socialist Party of India and was a prominent member of the Rashtra Seva Dal.
He was mayor of Pune in 1974-75 and was Maharashtra minister of state for home between 1978-80.
Vaidya was at the forefront of Samyukta Maharashtra movement which fought for a Marathi-speaking state with Mumbai (then Bombay) as its capital.
He was mayor of Pune in 1974-75 and was also instrumental in forming trade unions of employees of the unorganised sector.
He was president of the Ammunition Factory Workers' Union in Kirkee in Pune.
