Car tax rates increased today for certain diesel vehicles in the UK.
The new tax rates were introduced to combat the toxic emissions diesel cars produce, which have been linked to respiratory issues in the past.
Nitrogen oxides, which are found in diesel exhaust emissions, have been linked to causing asthma, Alzheimer’s and heart disease.
The clampdown could see certain diesel drivers paying £500 more to tax their vehicle in the first year.
Until April 1st 2017, there was a large list of cars which paid no, to very little car tax.
However, last year the new strict tax rates significantly narrowed the list of vehicles that can avoid the fees.
There are, however, a number of cars on sale in the UK today that do not have too pay any VED.
Here is a list of cars you can buy that will pay zero car tax in the UK:
Renault Twizy
BMW i3
Nissan Leaf
Audi A3 e-tron
Renault Zoe
Hyundai Ioniq
VW e-Golf
VW e-Up!
Kia Soul EV
Smart fortwo electric
Nissan e-NV 200
Mercedes B-Class E
BMW
More expensive electric cars such as the Tesla Model S and Model X are required to pay the luxury car surcharge of £310 for the first five years, despite producing zero emissions.
The cars to be hit the hardest by the new diesel car tax rate increase are those that produce between 171 and 225g/km of CO2 emissions.
These cars face paying £500 more, if the car is registered after April 1st 2018.
Vehicles producing upwards of 131g/km of CO2 emissions will face paying between £300 and £400 extra on vehicle excise duty in the first year.
