GENOA – Nine people were taken to area hospitals after a three-car collision at the intersection of Route 23 and Melms Road on Sunday afternoon, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office.

Police said the crash occurred at 1:48 p.m. when an eastbound Chevy Malibu driven by Donna L. Johnson, 63, of Genoa, failed to stop at a stop sign on Melms at the intersection with Route 23. That put her car in the path of a vehicle that was headed south on Route 23 driven by Dawn M. Rauhut, 43. According to the news release, Rauhut swerved to the right to avoid Johnson's vehicle, then overcorrected and wound up in the path of oncoming northbound traffic on Route 23.

Rauhut's vehicle, which carried four passengers – three of them children – then collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Juan Lizcano, 33. There were six passengers in Lizcano's vehicle, two of them children.

Police did not provide details about what types of vehicles Rauhut and Lizcano were driving.

Firefighter/paramedics from Genoa-Kingston, Cortland, Sycamore and Marengo fire agencies responded to the crash scene.

Johnson will be cited for failure to yield, and Lizcano will be cited for driving without a license, police said.
