4 killed as car rams into tree

Chandigarh:  Four persons were killed, while another was injured after a car rammed into a tree on the Hoshiarpur-Chandigarh road, near Mahilpur in Punjab. "The accident took place past midnight. The victims had stopped their vehicle at a dhaba near Chabbewal, close to Hoshiarpur, to have dinner. Soon after they resumed their journey, the accident occurred as the driver lost control of the vehicle, which rammed into a tree near Mahilpur," Mahilpur Station House Officer (SHO) Baljit Singh said. He said there was a woman among those killed in the incident and added that the injured person was hospitalised at Ludhiana.

Haryana fixes remuneration for instructors

Chandigarh: Haryana Government has fixed the remuneration of instructors working under hospitality scheme in sub-offices on contract basis under outsourcing policy part-II in Government Industrial Training Institutes, being run by the Skill Development and Industrial Training Department, to Rs 35,400 per month. It will be effective from November 1, 2017, said the Department spokesperson adding that similarly, the Lab Attendants, engaged under similar policy and scheme, would get monthly remuneration of Rs 19,900.

PUCA urges Centre to release pending PMS funds

Mohali: Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA) has urged the Central Government to release pending post-matric scholarship (PMS) funds to the Punjab Government at the earliest. PUCA president Dr Anshu Kataria said that Rs 328.72 crore for 2015-16, Rs 719.52 crore for 2016-17 and Rs 567.55 crore for 2017-18 is pending under the scheme. PUCA senior vice president Amit Sharma said that the State government has released pending Rs 115 crore to the government institution and utility certificate has already been submitted to the Centre.

NSCA forwards its support to ‘Bharat Bandh’

Chandigarh: National Scheduled Castes Alliance, a socio-political organisation, on Sunday decided to participate and support ‘Bharat Bandh’. Its president Paramjit Singh Kainth said that with four MPs and 34 MLAs, Punjab has the largest population of SC community, while appealing to all of them to “stand against atrocities met with the community” thinking above the party lines. He said that every Punjabi, furthermore every Indian, should participate in ‘Bharat Bandh’ and every shopkeeper, trader etc should observe the bandh which should be observed peacefully.

PO arrested in embezzlement case

Chandigarh: Gurugram Police's Special Task Force has succeeding in arresting a proclaimed offender from Rewari wanted in embezzlement of crores of rupees. A reward of Rs 50,000 on his arrest had been announced by Haryana Police. Spokesperson said that the accused has been identified as Somdev, a native of Dehkora in Jhajjar, and a case was registered at City Police Station, Rewari, in 2008 for taking huge money from a doctor and later refused to repay. A Police team, on a tip-off, arrested the accused from Rewari Bus Stand.

Over 350 from tricity qualifies for Bank PO, clerk

Chandigarh: The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) — a Pune-based recruitment body which conducts exam for the selection of probationary officers (POs) and clerk for all 21 public sector banks like Bank of Baroda, PNB, Canara Bank except SBI — on Sunday declared the result of Bank PO and clerk exam. This year, a candidate scoring 47.04 percent has become a PO in Bank. Out of 5,000 candidates appeared from the Tricity of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, more than 350 students have qualified. Total 3,562 students have qualified as PO and 7880 as clerk from all over India.

 

Hackathon-2018 concludes

Mohali: Two-day Smart India Hackathon-2018 (SIH2018), Software Edition, concluded on Sunday at Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) Landran. Team Enigmatics from KLS Gogte Institute of Technology, Karnataka, bagged the first position for developing a mobile application based on GIS-based technology for field inspection for Horticulture Department to aid monitoring of Micro Irrigation projects. The team was conferred with cash prize of Rs one lakh along with certificates and trophies. Over 350 students of 44 teams were competing at nodal center CGC Landran — the venue for covering problem statements of the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare to come up with viable IT-based solutions for six problems faced by agriculture sector.
