Communal incidents on the rise, says CPI

Suravaram calls for unity among Left and Opposition parties to counter BJP

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has expressed concern over the rise in incidents of communal violence across the country in line with the increasing “fascist tendencies of the ruling BJP under the guidance of Hindutva forces”.

The CPI stressed the need for a broad-based unity among the Left, secular and democratic forces to counter these tendencies which were threatening the democratic processes. While the functions and finances were being centralised ever since the BJP government took over, intolerance among the ruling party leaders and cadre was growing, CPI general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy said, adding instances of large-scale corruption including the Rafale deal were coming to light very frequently.

Mr. Sudhakar Reddy, who addressed the party functionaries as part of the second Telangana State Council congress here on Monday, stressed the need for taking help of like-minded parties to make the struggle more broader and effective. “This is not an electoral alliance. There is a need for broad strategies to defeat the BJP and the Sangh Parivar forces,” he said.

He cited the recent results of by-elections held in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and other States where the BJP was defeated with significant margins as the opposition parties could come to an understanding. He expressed concern that the benefits intended for the poor and needy were not reaching them as the “communal” and “corporate friendly” BJP Government was doling out largesse to the corporates.

This was evident from the significant rise in the wealth of the corporates while the plight of the poor worsened. All the sectors, especially agriculture sector, were facing crisis as could be seen from the agitations launched by farmers in different parts of the country. The working class too was facing equal difficulties as the government had intensified efforts to privatise the public sector companies.

He cautioned the Left parties against the campaign lodged by the ruling class about the perceived differences among the Left parties. “There could be difference of opinion among the various constituents of the Left, but this is being exaggerated. We are confident of resolving the differences and standing united to face the BJP,” he said.
