NEW DELHI: Construction of national highways hit an all-time high of about 10,000 km in 2017-18, which translates to 28 km a day. The previous record was 8,231 km, achieved in 2016-17.

“The increased pace of award during the last financial year which ended on Saturday and ongoing projects will help us achieve the target of constructing 40 km per day in 2018-19. The average award of contracts was about 45 km per day. All the works that have been awarded will start in the next six months,” said a highways ministry official.

TOI had on Sunday reported how the government has pushed investment in the highway sector by almost Rs 1.5 crore during 2017-18 and all these will translate into more construction activity and job generation across the country.

Among the infrastructure projects, road construction remains the key as the most tangible sign of development while also being a job-creator.

The NDA government had announced to revive the highway sector which had been the focus of the Vajpayee government that came up with the Golden Quadrilateral project.
