Destinations globally taking steps to tackle over tourism

indexVarious destinations around the world are taking measures to tackle over tourism for this summer season after protests across Europe last year that shed light on the problem of overcrowding and effect on local economies.

For years, governments had neglected over tourism and treated travel like any other industry. Hence, this negligence in tackling overcrowding left many citizens in places like Barcelona, Dubrovnik, and Venice railing for proper answers and measures.

Organized street protests in Barcelona and other cities demanded action from elected officials. With peak tourism season about to start in many areas of the world, the travel industry is probably wondering: Has anything changed since last year?

Angered residents will likely feel crowded this year as well. Dubrovnik announced that this year it will start limiting the number of tourists that can enter its city center on a daily basis, which could impact some cruise lines in the city.

Barcelona hosted the Barcelona Global Summit last month that had discussions on the common challenges and learnings from over tourism. Many other countries globally are also implementing various measures to curb the growing menace of over tourism in popular places and attractions.
