A ground floor office of a nationalised bank was gutted in fire in Bhiwandi town today, officials said.
No one was injured in the incident that occurred this evening after the staff had left the office, located in a three-storey building in Kalher area on Bhiwandi Thane road.
According to officials, the blaze was first noticed by residents of the building who alerted the fire brigade.
A Fire official said that documents and office furniture were gutted in the fire but the currency notes are unaffected as they were kept in fire-proof lockers.
The cause of the fire was not known immediately.
A total of 12 families occupying the rooms in the building were rescued and taken to safer places by fire personnel.
