Airlines increasingly invests in biometric technology

man-face-biometric-points-260x260More half (nearly 63%) of airports and half (43%) of airlines are planning to invest in biometric ID management solutions in the next three years.

 

As per a report published by an aviation technology company, SITA, three out of five airports and two out of five airlines are investing in innovative biometric technology to improve speed and security as passenger numbers continue to increase and the number of annual fliers is slated to nearly double to 7.8 billion by the year 2036.

 

Biometric technologies can comprise palm vain scanning, voice and facial recognition, fingerprint scanning and digital passports.

 

This report reveals that an estimated 75% of smartphones would have fingerprint sensors by 2020 but only 57% of passengers said that they would be happy to utilize biometrics for airport ID.

 

Changi Airport of Singapore and Australia’s Brisbane airport had trialed facial recognition ID management. In February 2018, Air Asia became the first airline in Asia to introduce boarding aided with biometric facial recognition technology.

 

Sean Farrell, Director of Strategy & Innovation at SITA, said in a press release that efficient identity management is important for better security and at the same time it improves the passenger experience to a great extent.
