Speeding motorists were snared more than 8,000 times by cameras set up while roadworks were carried out on the A55.

A total of 8,270 speeding offences were recorded between January 22 and March 16 on the A55 at Abergele, where a 40mph limit was in place while work was carried out to install a noise barrier.

One motorist was even caught travelling at 104mph through the roadworks - with two drivers also caught speeding on 11 separate occasions.

A spokesman for GoSafe said: “The temporary speed limit was put in place to protect all road users and the workforce.

“The speed was reduced as the lanes were narrowed bringing the vehicles closer together and the temporary barrier that was put in place will not stop a car travelling at 70mph.

“The speed limit complies with the safety features of the barrier and the protection of the work force.”

Of the offences recorded, 2,411 took speed awareness courses, 1,775 were given a fixed penalty notice and 108 ended up in court.

A total of 2,639 offences are still being processed, 1,278 could not be processed and 59 were cancelled.

According to figures released by GoSafe, hundreds of motorists were caught driving over 60mph, with dozens travelling above 70mph.

Six drivers were caught travelling between 80mph and 90mph, with three driving between 90mph and 100mph.

A high number of motorists were caught multiple times by the average speed cameras.

Two drivers - both with Irish number plates - were caught speeding on 11 separate occasions, with three - two of which with Irish plates - were caught 10 times.

A total of 408 drivers were caught twice by the cameras.

The noise barriers were installed after fed up residents living by the dual carriageway near Abergele said they were unable to go out in their gardens at busy times, and live with constant noise and fumes from the traffic.

When the work started, the Welsh Government said: “The 40mph speed limit has been put in place to ensure the safety of the workforce and the travelling public.

“The reduced speed also enables the smooth flow of traffic through the narrow lanes at busy periods which benefits all motorists.”

The noise barrier has been constructed of recycled glass and reinforced plastic, and is located within the highway boundary adjacent to the westbound carriageway to the west of Sea Road Bridge.
