BJP MP Prahlad Joshi likens Hubballi area to Pakistan, booked for promoting enmity between religious groups

HUBBALLI: Dharwad MP Prahlad Joshi has landed in trouble with the Kasabapet police in Hubballi registering a case against him for hurting religious sentiments and promoting enmity between different religious groups. The case was registered on Friday night and the MP has been booked under IPC Sections 153 A and 298.

Joshi, who had visited Gousia Town on Thursday to meet the family of Gurusiddappa Ambiger who died in a group clash, had allegedly likened the locality and Kasabpet in the city to Pakistan. He also reportedly stated that the mosques in these areas may be storing lethal weapons.

Taking exception to his alleged remarks, Muslim organisations staged protest outside Kasabapet police station on Friday evening. Police had tough time in pacifying the angry mob and assured them that they will register a case against the MP. The protesters submitted a petition, with clippings of media reports on MP’s inflammatory speech, and sought strict action against Joshi. 

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Renuka Sukumar said the investigation is in the preliminary stage and they are inquiring with people who were present at the time when the MP made the remarks on that day. “A police team is gathering all evidence, including newspaper clippings and video footage. We will also seek cooperation from media persons who were present during MP’s visit. If we find enough material, then we will proceed further,” she said.

Joshi, however, defended his statement. Speaking to The New Indian Express, he said, “I have not said anything wrong. I said that law and order had declined in this area to such an extent that it is no better than Pakistan. And I had expressed doubts over storing of arms and ammunition in mosques because I received complaints in this regard. I asked the police to search the mosques. What is wrong in this?” he asked.

Muslim leaders from Hubballi said the community members were deeply hurt by Joshi’s statements. “The MP’s allegations are baseless. Police should take strict action against him so that he refrains from making such statements in future,” said a community leader.
