As I write this, I am preparing for Passover, the Jewish festival that marks the Israelites’ journey out of slavery in Egypt. At this time of year, as I rid my home of all crumbs of bread, I try to think of ways to relate this ancient festival to modern life.

We all have our own forms of bondage, some harder to shake than others. One that can be much easier to address than it often seems is money.

There are quick and simple ways to “spring clean” your finances.

First, go through your bank statements. Check for any unrecognised payments, which could be signs of fraud. Cancel direct debits for subscriptions you no longer use, such as neglected gym memberships or unwatched television services.
