A police officer has been sent flying 20 metres into the air after being hit by a car in Brisbane's south on Sunday.

The officer, from Road Policing Command, was hit near the intersection of Bapaume and Peronne roads in Tarragindi about 4.20pm.

Police said he was operating a speed gun when he noticed a silver 1993 Honda Civic with the registration 390XOB travelling at speed.

It is unclear whether the officer stepped out into the road in an attempt to stop the car or the car deliberately drove at him, but he was hit and flew through the air.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the officer suffered leg and hip injuries and was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

His injuries were described as "serious" but paramedics said he was conscious and breathing.

Police were investigating and hunting the driver of the Honda Civic.
