Car tax 2018 - Avoid these diesel cars as they face up to £500 extra charges from today
CERTAIN diesel cars will face paying higher car tax rates from today, due to the new fees being introduced, costing drivers up to £500 more in the first year.
BENTLEY
The new diesel car tax rates come into force today, which could significantly add to the cost of vehicle excise duty for thousands of drivers.
All new diesel cars registered after April 1st 2018, that don’t meet an emissions standard, face paying between £15 and £500 more in tax for the first year.
This is due to a new emissions standard that is being introduced - Real World Driving Emissions 2.
Diesel cars that do not meet the standard will face paying up to £500 more in vehicle excise duty (VED).
The issue with this is due to the fact the emissions standard does not become mandatory until 2020, meaning no new car currently meets it.
Under the driving emissions standard the amount of nitrogen oxides per kilometre a diesel car can emit has been significantly reduced.
Motorists that buy a car, which produces between 171 and 190 g/km CO2 will pay £400 more in the first year, while cars that produce between 191 and 225 g/km CO2, will have to pay an additional £500 in the first year.
Cars that produce between 130g/km to 150 g/km of CO2 face paying £300 more in the first year.
Here are some of the cars that will be hit the hardest by the inflated fees:
