Cauvery: Puducherry plans contempt plea against Centre

Lieutenant Govenror’s approval is needed for going ahead with the petition

PUDUCHERRY

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy on Saturday said that the Government would file a contempt petition against the Centre in the Supreme Court for failing to set up the Cauvery Management Board after getting the nod of Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi.

He told presspersons here that the government had adopted a resolution in the Legislative Assembly urging the Centre to set up the Cauvery Management Board immediately.

However, the deadline given by the Supreme Court ended on Thursday and the Centre failed to take any steps to constitute the management board.

Mr. Narayanasamy said the government had taken steps to file a contempt petition against the Centre in the Supreme Court.

Since Puducherry was a Union Territory, the government had to get the nod of the Lt. Governor.

The government would decide on the next course of action after holding discussions with its ally and other like minded partners, he said.
