Sunday might be the night local fans of Colton McGrath get to see him perform on “American Idol.”

McGrath, a transgender student at B.M.C. Durfee High School and well-known singer-songwriter in the SouthCoast and Massachusetts arts scene has been waiting, like the rest of his friends and family, to see his performances airing on “American Idol.”

Aside from brief glimpses on air, McGrath has progressed through various stages of the show behind the scenes since it started airing on March 11 as “Season One” on its new network, ABC.

Throughout the process, which started last summer with auditions in the open call bus tour in Boston, McGrath said there have been lots of interviews and performances related to the reality show. “I really don’t have any way of knowing what will air,” he said.

After last Monday’s show, McGrath announced to his fans on his Facebook page that he could officially say he made it through the Hollywood Week group rounds to the solo rounds, which will be aired on Sunday. “Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll show my solo audition. Hope you all keep watching,” he added on Facebook.

On Thursday, McGrath told The Herald News, “Hollywood Week was truly an amazing experience in every way.”

McGrath, who lives in Freetown, has been performing professionally in Rhode Island and Massachusetts for the past three years, initially as Cassidy McGrath.

He recently released an original single, “Empty Skies,” available for download on iTunes."The response to my new original song "Empty Skies" has been fantastic! I've had several people tell me that it's a catchy song and it gets stuck in their heads. I really love the vibe of this song and the fact that there are so many genres evident within it. It's a combination of alternative, blues and a hint of indie. I hope to write more like it."
