In Sri Lanka, a team of navy divers achieved a rare landmark when they re-floated the Royal Navy ship, 75 years after it sunk in Trincomalee harbor during World War II.
AIR correspondent reports, It was a gigantic operation involving around 100 sailors and mechanics who carried out the salvage operation over more than five months.
The ship which was bombed by Japanese forces in 1942, was later sunk to be used as pier for naval ships. However, with plans of expansion of Trincomalee harbor, it became necessary to create more berthing facilities and thus it was planned to refloat the ship wreckage.
Several underwater repairs were carried out during the process to strengthen the ship and make it recover its buoyancy to become afloat. Incidentally, a big crane machine used by a Japanese cement company located nearby, was used throughout the operations.
