Kamara helps Whitecaps slay his former team

Former Columbus forward Kei Kamara scored the winner in 78th minute as the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the host Crew 2-1 at Mapfre Stadium on Saturday.

The Whitecaps (3-1-1) rallied for two goals, and had another overturned, in the second half after Gyasi Zardes gave Columbus (3-1-1) a 1-0 first-half lead.

Brek Shea got the equalizer for Vancouver in the 51st minute to start the rally.

Vancouver improved to 5-2-2 all-time versus the Crew and has not lost to them since the Whitecaps' inaugural 2011 season. The Crew has lost four straight at home to Vancouver.

Columbus had a 14-game regular-season unbeaten streak (9-0-5) snapped. It was the second longest in team history.

"We had them locked down in the first half," Zardes said afterward. "In the second half they had, what, three chances? And they scored twice."

Kamara's third goal of the season was a header from 12 yards from a cross by Felipe. It was the first time Columbus trailed this season.

Seven minutes earlier, the Whitecaps had the lead goal taken off the board when a video review ruled that Alphonso Davies had committed a handball. The ball bounced up and hit his right arm as he was dribbling toward the goal.

After Kamara's score, the Crew's Artur missed the tying goal by inches in the 86th minute when his header glanced the crossbar off a corner kick by Federico Higuain.

Zardes had put the Crew ahead 1-0 in the 29th minute, scoring from the 6-yard box on rebound of shot by Pedro Santos. Zardes has four goals after scoring twice in 24 games for the Los Angeles Galaxy last season.

Shea got his second of the season in a similar fashion with the goal99 coming on a rebound following the initial attempt by Bernie Ibini.
