Snapchat Easter Egg Hunt 2018: How To Collect Eggs, Play
Snapchat got into the Easter spirit by creating an egg hunt for its users, mixing geocaching with augmented reality. The “Great Snapchat Egg Hunt!” is essentially like Pokémon Go, but instead of catching pocket monsters around the neighborhood, users will take pictures of Easter eggs. Unlike Pokémon Go, though, the eggs won’t disappear once they are acquired.
Snapchat has hidden more than 1 million eggs throughout Canada and the U.S. Each egg has a point value: Regular eggs are worth one point, but those harder-to-find golden eggs are worth five. Snapchat will keep track of points and compare them to any other friends who are playing along. The eggs can be found at public places like movie theaters, restaurants, the post office and cafes—to name a few.
To access the game, open the Snap Map. Using the Snap Map means friends will be able to see the users locations, but if hunters want to be incognito during their hunt, they can search for eggs in Ghost Mode. The only problem with this is others can’t see the tally of points the anonymous hunter accrued.
So what’s the point of this game? Well, there certainly isn’t any chocolate involved, unfortunately. It might be Snapchat’s way of getting its users to open the app after they experienced some significant setbacks this month. First, Snapchat had an unpopular update, which essentially disrupted the user experience. Then, Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kylie Jenner denounced the update, further distancing users from the app and possibly causing Snapchat to lose $1.3 billion in market value. Things got worse for Snapchat when an ad asked users if they would rather slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown. The “Lemon” singer slammed the app and called for people to delete it, and the app's stock dipped. Snapchat, however, didn’t reveal if the egg hunt was an effort to get people to use the app after recent troubles this month.
The hunt started Friday and will last until the end of midnight EDT on Easter Sunday.
