One dead, six 'seriously injured' after fiery crash near Campbelltown

A teenager has died and six people are in hospital after a fiery eight-vehicle crash near Campbelltown on Friday night.

The eight cars collided at Campbelltown Road near Rose Payten Drive at Woodbine at about 7.15pm on Friday.  Two of the cars invovled in the crash caught on fire.

Police are unsure what led to the pileup, which required several people to be airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, as it is "too early in inquiries to tell," a NSW Police spokeswoman said on Saturday.

An 18-year-old man, travelling as a passenger in a vehicle of a Kia Sportage, died at the scene.

The driver of the car, a 57-year-old man, and his other three passengers, two men aged 19 and 20, and an 18-year-old woman, were seriously injured.

All four have undergone surgery overnight in hospital, and are in serious but stable conditions on Saturday morning.

Another car involved in the pileup, a blue Commodore, caught fire as a result of the crash. The car's driver, a 26-year-old man from Mount Annan, was rescued from the blaze by witnesses.

He underwent surgery at Liverpool Hospital for "internal injuries" overnight, police say.

A female passenger travelling in another car was also seriously injured.

The drivers and passengers of the other cars were assessed at the scene and taken to hospital for further medical checks, but police believe they were not seriously injured.

The investigation is expected to take some time due to its complexity, the police spokeswoman said.

Police are urging anyone with any information in relation to the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
