THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government will provide free treatment to Vasu who was subjected to ill-treatment by a nursing assistant at medical college. Health minister K K Shylaja who visited Vasu at his son's residence at Anakkulam here on Saturday said that Vasu will be admitted at Punalur taluk hospital and his further treatment will be done free of cost.

The medical college authorities had on Thursday placed a nursing assistant under suspension who was caught on video holding Vasu's arm firmly and attempted to twist it. Health minister has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident. Vasu who is a coconut climber, was admitted to medical college after he had fallen off coconut tree and dislocated his hip. He has a son and a wife. Vasu has been taking care of Unni, son of his daughter who had died a few years ago. He was forced to work even at his old age to fend for his family. Unni had to discontinue studies after class 9 due to financial constraints.

The minister also said that the future education of Unni will be taken care of by the department of social justice. Gram panchayat authorities have been directed to initiate steps to ensure that studies of Unni do not get affected.

The minister said that incident of attempted physical torture at medical college is being viewed seriously by the government. "This incident has happened at a time when the government is trying to give a facelift to government hospitals. Strong action will be taken against incidents of this kind,'' said K K Shylaja.
