Madras University syndicate gets 6 new members

Elections were held for six vacancies in the Syndicate of the University of Madras on Saturday.

Former Syndicate member S.S. Sundaram, Head of the Department of Indian History; K. Jothi Sivagnanam, Head of the Department of Economics; S. Manivasakan, director of the UGC Centre for South and South East Asian Studies; S. Sumathi, Head of the Anthropology Department; E. Murugan, Head of Physical Chemistry and K.R. Venkatesan, Principal of Sri Sankara Arts and Science College, Kancheepuram, were elected.

For the first time, six persons chose to contest the elections as independent candidates. They included B. Poorna, SSS Jain College, T. Nagar; M. Venkatramanan, Principal of Chandraprabhu College; Lalitha Balakrishnan, Principal of MOP Vaishnav College; S. Karunanidhi, Head of the Department of Psychology; S. Elumalai, Head of the Department of Biotechnology; and V. Mahadevan, physical director at the university.

Of the 125 Senate members, 116 participated in the poll, according to an official of the university.
