Three men were arrested by Smyrna police Wednesday night after officers allegedly found heroin inside their vehicle following a traffic stop, officials said.
Officers pulled over a vehicle for registration violations at about 8 p.m. on U.S. 13 and Monrovia Dr. and determined that drugs maybe within the vehicle, said Cpl. Brian Donner, a spokesman with the Smyrna Police Department.
A search found 2,405 bags of heroin weighing about 16.8 grams and $1,343 in suspected drug money, Donner said.
Officers took the occupants: James Dobbins, 30 of Dover, Kiree Wise, 27 of Newark and John White, 28 of Wilmington into custody, Donner said.
During the investigation, Mr. Dobbins was able to escape from the rear of a patrol vehicle and flee on foot while handcuffed. He was located a short distance away in the woods and secured again by officers after a brief struggle, Donner said.
All three men were charged with conspiracy and possession of a controlled substance, Donner said.
White was also charged with vehicle offenses. Dobbins was also charged with resisting arrest, theft and escape, Donner said.
