How do I stop my staircase from squeaking?

Q We have a staircase that is about 20 years old, which was already installed when we bought our house.

Having recently improved the loft area, where the stairs go up to, the treads creak very badly. We are loathe to carpet this area again until we have a solution. We were told that we could add a quadrant beading to the treads, but this did not make any difference. Do you have any suggestions that could help us?

A There are a couple of different options you can try. Sometimes the creaking noise comes from where the top of the stair riser (the vertical section of a stair) meets or connects to the stair tread.
