A 53-year-old Millsboro man, who fled into the woods after crashing an SUV Thursday, has been charged with his seventh drunken driving offense, state police said.
State troopers were dispatched to a vehicle collision about 10:15 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Avenue of Honor and Bethesda Road north of Millsboro, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe, a police spokeswoman.
Arriving troopers, who found an unoccupied 2000 Ford Explorer on its driver's side, learned the vehicle had been southbound on Bethesda Road when it exited the roadway and struck a mailbox.
The Explorer continued southbound on the road approaching the intersection at Avenue of Honor, where it failed to halt at a stop sign and struck a 2016 Honda Odyssey, Jaffe said.
The operator of the Odyssey remained at the scene and was not injured.
The Explorer operator, identified as William A. Bell, fled the scene on foot, but a short time later was found by Delaware State Police helicopter in the woods, less then a quarter of a mile from the collision, Jaffe said.
A computer check revealed that Bell had six previous DUI convictions, making this his seventh offense. He was charged with his seventh DUI, leaving the scene of a collision, driving without a valid license, failure to stop at a stop sign and other traffic-related offenses.
Bell was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute after failing to post more than $27,000 cash bail.
