FORT EDWARD — A 53-year-old Fort Edward man has again been arrested on child rape charges, this time after new information came to light about his alleged behavior on a boat last July.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office arrested Richard M. Alger, of Mechanic Street, on Thursday and charged him with predatory sex assault against a child, course of sexual conduct against a child, criminal sexual act and sexual abuse — all felonies and all in the first degree — as well as endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
The charges come more than two months after he was charged with third-degree rape for allegedly raping a child under the age of 17 while on a boat ride on the Champlain Canal in the town of Fort Edward last July.
Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy said new evidence came to light after that first arrest that indicated Alger had also raped a child under the age of 13 while on the boat. Additionally, he is alleged to have raped the child on more than one occasion, over several months, in the village of Fort Edward.
Alger was jailed without bail and an order of protection was issued for the new victim.
