Professor emeritus of sociology and children's studies since 2016, Dr. Lenzer was responsible for founding and directing the children's studies, as well as teaching as a full professor at both Brooklyn College and the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center. Beginning her career in academia as a visiting assistant professor in the department of sociology at New York University in 1962, she then became a program evaluator for interdisciplinary research programs on issues, values, and ethics health care in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University from the mid-1970s until 1980. She also worked in the capacity of a research associate at Columbia, as a research fellow at the National Humanities Center, and visiting scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, among several other roles.
While teaching in New York, Dr. Lenzer's efforts led to a new minor in children's studies in 1994 for all liberal arts majors. By 2001, a 30-credit interdisciplinary children's studies concentration was developed for those majoring in early childhood education and childhood education programs. Eight years later, in 2009, an interdisciplinary bachelor's program in children's studies was established. Dr. Lenzer was also responsible for founding the Sociology of Children as a new field.
Recently, Dr. Lenzer worked with legislators to spearhead legislation for an independent Office of the Child Advocate for New York. Recognized many times for her work, in addition to receiving numerous fellowships and grants during her career, she also received many awards, including being honored as a Pioneer to Education Corporal Punishment from the Center for Human Rights of Children at Loyola University in 2014 and being selected for Head of the Class Column from Salute to Scholars at CUNY in 2013. In 1997, she was awarded with the National Lewis Hine Award in honor of outstanding service on behalf of children and youth of the National Child Labor Committee, which was founded by an Act of Congress in 1904.
A founding chair of the American Sociological Association, founding organizer of the sociology of children section of the American Sociological Association, and longstanding member of the International Sociological Association, who has also contributed numerous articles to professional journals and chapters to books in her area of expertise, Dr. Lenzer also co-edited a book called "Sociology of Religion: A Book of Readings." Born in Ingolstadt, Germany, Dr. Lenzer earned a Diploma in philosophy and journalism and a Doctor of Philosophy in sociology, philosophy and journalism from Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität München. She later married her husband, Steven Marcus, in 1966, with whom she has one son. She has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
