A testing time for school students in Kattupakkam

Students of an institution in Kattupakkam struggle every day to cross a section of Mount-Poonamallee Main Road

During the morning rush hour, students of a school in Kattupakkam, near Iyyapanthangal, go through the ordeal of crossing Mount–Poonamallee Main Road. Yes, an ordeal it is for these children!

Despite the presence of a school in the vicinity, this section of the busy road has not been provided with speed breakers; nor does it have a traffic signal.

“During school hours, the staff of the school help the students cross the road. At least during rush hour, a traffic police personnel should be deployed on this section,” says K. Vasanthi, a resident of Kattupakkam.

In fact, there is no traffic police personnel from SRMC, near the Chennai Bypass, all the way to the Mangadu junction, a distance of around three kilometres.

In recent years, Kattupakkam has emerged as a commuter town, where young professionals look for accommodation. A sizeable number of software professionals working at DLF IT Park in Ramapuram live here. Therefore, this section of Mount–Poonamallee Main Road is extremely busy during rush hour.

“Steps will be taken soon to ensure the pedestrian crossing in Kattupakkam is made safe for pedestrians,” says a State Highways official.
