CHENNAI: Researchers working in different institutions supported by the central government’s Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) have published as many as 6,214 papers in reputed journals in the last three years -- nearly twice the number compared to those from the US. These research papers covered topics related to nuclear energy and related subjects.
Responding to questions on patents filed by the DAE, minister of state for personnel, public grievances and pensions and PMO Jitendra Singh said India had published 6,214 research papers and obtained 31 patents between 2015 and 2018.

According to the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) database, the US published 3,550 research papers in the field during the same period while China and the UK published 660 and 564 papers, respectively.

The minister said the DAE was a broad-based multi-disciplinary organisation incorporating basic research, applied research, technology development and its translation into industrial applications.

The DAE has been involved in the development of nuclear power technology, applications of radiation technologies in the fields of agriculture, medicine, industry and basic research, according to its website.

The DAE has five research centres, three industrial organisations, five public sector undertakings and three service organisations. Besides, it promotes and funds extramural research in nuclear and allied fields, mathematics and a national institute (deemed university). It also supports eight institutes engaged in research in basic sciences, astronomy, astrophysics, cancer research and education.
