I came across this article at Supercall.com, a website about cocktails and the culture of, about the results of a study published in Science Daily that concluded that tequila is good for your bones. So I say, goodbye milk!
The Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Mexico found that the sugar molecules in blue agave (which is what tequila is made from) helped lab mice produce osteocalcin, the stuff that grows new and thicker bones. The researchers plan on seeing if these sugar molecules, called fructans, can help patients with osteoporosis.
After reading this article, I decided to see if tequila had any other unique health properties. And lo and behold, I found several. First, tequila is full of calories (from sugar), just like all other spirits. However, tequila has something others don't - agavins, which is a type of sugar that our bodies can't digest and therefore just moves through us. Not only that, but they stimulate the metabolism and actually help burn fat. I know what kind of diet I'm going on soon!
And how about this - tequila is a probiotic. This benefit comes from those same fructans that helps with bones. Apparently fructans supplies loads of probiotics. Researchers warn however, than too much tequila will do the opposite to your digestive tract.
This one I already knew because I practice it. A shot of tequila (I actually sip) after dinner serves as a great digestif. It absolutely works in my case. Conversely, before meals it can serve as an aperitif, stimulating metabolism and appetite.
And lastly, a shot of tequila apparently with certain medications helps improve its passage into our bodies. Regarding medications that treat Crohn's disease or colitis, those same fructans are "natural chemical carriers that essentially ferry the drugs past corrosive stomach acid to the colon where they are needed most."
As my usual disclaimer, any health benefits from any alcoholic beverage goes away if not taken in moderation.
