ALBANY - To the shock of many who enjoyed a beer or light lunch at Albany’s only waterfront bar and restaurant, the Riverfront Bar & Grille is up for auction.

The floating barge, which has been moored at the Corning Preserve in Albany for over 20 years, closed for the season last September with little hint of it being the business’s last. Now six months later, it’s up for auction, according to a Collar City Auctions listing.

It’s unclear what led to the two-deck barge being taken over by a bank, but Albany County records show a $14,000 judgement issued against Riverfront’s owner over a contract with U.S. Foods, Inc. late last year. The floating bar’s owner, Cheri West, did not return calls for comment Thursday.

Former IBM Corp. employee Kevin Shufelt first opened the barged-based restaurant in 1996. Then in 2006, he opened a similar establishment, the Rusty Anchor, at the Hudson Shores Park in Watervliet. Shufelt sold the Riverfront Barge to West in 2011, he confirmed, but declined to comment further.

Albany resident Bryan Marcou-O’Malley said he’d regularly take his kids there on a summer evening, and had visited just last year.

“They would watch the ducks and boats go up and down the river, and once their (and my) minds were completely blown when they got to watch the bridge spin,” he said, referring to the Livingston Avenue railroad bridge, which has a rotating swing span that opens to allow large ships to pass. “The food was OK. The location is tremendous. Hopefully with the new walkway coming, someone does something with it.”

Albany aims to turn an underutilized Interstate 787 ramp into downtown into a linear park with pathways for pedestrians and bicyclists that would connect the upper portion of the city’s waterfront to Clinton Avenue.

The ramp exits Quay Street on 787's northbound side and curves underneath an elevated portion of the expressway before looping south and merging with a southbound ramp off to Clinton Avenue.

The online auction for the barge begins at 9 a.m. Friday and will continue until 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26. It’s being sold “as-is” with prior lease agreements to operate on the Hudson River at the Corning Preserve. The barge features a kitchen, bar, two enclosed decks and one open deck. Bids will start at $50,000.

Collar City Auctions will be hosting two previews of the barge from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 23 and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. April 24.

Happy Cappuccino in the Crossgates Mall and the Parkside Eatery in Saratoga Springs also are up for auction. For details on those auctions, which are currently ongoing, visit www.collarcityauctionsonline.com.
