Children injured in tram and car collision

Update: Two children were hospitalised following a crash between a tram and a car in Northcote last night.

The crash happened on St Georges Road about 6.30pm last night, and the children were taken to the Royal Children's Hospital with minor injuries.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said a primary school-aged girl sustained minor injuries to her head and shoulders, while a preschool-aged girl received minor injuries to her upper arm.

A third person was assessed at the scene but did not need to be taken to hospital. It is not clear whether the children were passengers in the car or the tram.

Body found in burnt out car

A man's body has been found in a burnt out car in Frankston South.

We'll see what else we can find out.

On this day

On this day in 1922, British Antarctic explorer Robert Scott wrote the following entry in his diary:

"We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker of course and the end cannot be far. It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. For God's sake, look after our people."

These were the last words he wrote cataloguing the failed expedition, and it is believed he died the day he wrote them in the freezing -40 degree conditions. His body was recovered eight months later.

Energy bills have been rising

Power bills for Victorians have soared one year on from the abrupt closure of the ailing Hazelwood power station, Cole Latimer reports.

But the state has managed to dodge large-scale blackouts and greenhouse gas emissions have dived, he adds.  [Check out the full article]

There's also a piece in the paper today by Debbie Cuthbertson on a man who was slugged with a $8000 gas bill for about $84 of actual usage. The mismatch was because the utility company concerned charged him for estimated usage rather than the actual usage. [Check out the full article]

Today's word

For those who are waiting in an expectant manner for the day's target word, here are the letters:

L R Y E T A L A L

A bit of outside-the-box thinking is often all that's needed to get these words. If you've solved it, let me know. First with the solution gets the bragging rights.

Yesterday's answer was EXPECTANT (which is why I included it in the first sentence above).

The weather

It reached 30 degrees yesterday, but that's probably going to be the last 30 degree day for some time.

Today it will be considerably cooler - it will be 23 degrees, becoming sunny in the afternoon. There's a slim chance of rain.

The next couple of days will be much the same weatherwise.
