With people packing their bags to travel elsewhere for spring break, travel professionals are meeting in West Michigan to learn about tourism in the state.
The three day Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference on Tourism at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel started on Tuesday, March 27.
Around 700 travel professionals have signed up to learn from the events, speakers and exhibitors.
“Tourism is one of our flagship industries,” lieutenant governor Brian Calley said. “It’s one of those powerhouses in Michigan and it’ been getting stronger. We’ve had another great season last year and then we’re looking forward to another great year this year.”
The theme of this year’s conference is diversity and inclusion.
David Lorenz, the Travel Michigan vice president said, “We want to make sure that everybody in the industry understands more about what does diversity mean and what does inclusion mean. The more diverse we are, the stronger we are.”
The conference is a wonderful platform for travel professionals to come together and learn from each other.
The importance of the tourism industry to Michigan’s economy is undeniable.
“As the travel industry grows and prospers, communities grow and prosper,” Lorenz said.
“That means jobs, that means better roads, better schools, more police, more firemen.
Because every dollar that we invest in tourism at the state level brings back more than $8 in tax revenue.”
The Pure Michigan advertising campaign contributed $1.5 billion in spending around the state in 2016.
According to officials, the campaign costs about $34 million, which helps pay for the commercials on TV, on digital and on the radio.
