TROY — Firefighters rescued several dogs from a burning home on Sixth Avenue but other pets perished in the fire.

Some pets were killed Thursday morning when fire broke out in a home at 158 Sixth Ave.

Fire Chief Tom Garrett said the fire began in the first-floor kitchen and spread to the upper floors.

Firefighters vented the roof to allow the heat to dissipate and contain the spread of the fire.
