NAGPUR: It was an emotional moment at the
Maharajbagh Zoo in Nagpur when Jaai, a 10-year-old tigress, was cremated on Thursday. Zoo staff, forest officials and wildlife activists paid their last tributes to the tigress.
Dr SS Bawaskar, zoo officer in-charge, said that Jaai was one of the two tiger cubs that were rescued from a mob 10 years ago after their mother went missing from Mendki at Bramhapuri forest division in Chandrapur. Both were brought to
Maharajbagh Zoo on November 2, 2008 when they were just six months old. It was on November 17, 2008 that Jaai's sister Juhi died after receiving serious injuries. Since then, Jaai had been the pride of the zoo and continued to be its main attraction.
"On November 5, 2017 Jaai received a snake bite and her health started deteriorating. After several medical tests it was found that her kidney had failed. Subsequently her liver also failed and other organs like lungs and heart became weak. due to decrease in immunity. She was administered around 500 litre of saline water during the last four and a half months," said Bawaskar.
Dr ND Parlawar, associate dean, College of Agriculture Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, which runs the zoo, said Jaai's death came as a shocking news in the early morning. "She was one of the most popular animals of the zoo and since November 5, 2017 our team of doctors and experts and students from MAFSU tried their best to save her," he said.
