Income tax offices and Ayakar Seva Kendras (ASKs) across the country will remain open on March 29, March 30 and March 31 - all holidays - to facilitate the filing of income tax returns, the Finance Ministry has said.

March 29 (Thursday) is Mahavir Jayanti while March 30 is Good Friday, both notified holidays. March 31, on the other hand, is Saturday, a regular holiday.

However, with the deadline to file advance income tax returns (March 31) just a few days away, income tax offices and ASKs will remain open on all three days.

Like every year, the last date for filing income tax returns for 2017-18 is March 31, which is also the deadline for belated tax filings for the year 2016-17.

"[The] the last date for filing belated returns for Assessment Years 2016-17 and 2017-18 and revised returns for Assessment Year 2016-17 is 31st March 2018. The Financial Year 2017-18 closes on 31st March 2018 which is a Saturday. 29th & 30th March 2018 are also closed holidays," the Finance Ministry said in a tweet.

"To facilitate the filing of Income Tax Returns & completion of associated work, all Income Tax Offices throughout India shall remain open on 29th, 30th and 31st March 2018 respectively," the ministry added.

"The ASK Centres will also be kept open on these days. All efforts will be made to provide assistance to taxpayers and to facilitate the filing of returns by them," the ministry also said.

Earlier, there were rumours that banks would remain shut for a 5-day period this weekend. The rumours were based on the mistaken belief that banks would operate on Saturday.

However, a union leader has already clarified that banks will be open the coming Saturday since it is the fifth Saturday of the month. (Banks usually remain shut on the second and fourth Saturdays every month).

"The banks will work on March 31 (Saturday) and there are no continuous holidays according to the hoaxes spread on social media platforms," D. Thomas Franco Rajendra Dev, General Secretary of All India Bank Officers Confederation earlier told IANS.

Thomas said that banks will be closed on Thursday and Friday on the account of Mahavir Jayanti and Good Friday, and on April 2 (Monday) for the annual closing of accounts.
