Stuckings says, "We will sing in English to assist the audience to engage fully with the drama of the work."

The oratario - the older of two surviving Passions by the composer - was written during Bach's first year as director of church music in Leipzig and was first performed on April 7, 1724 and revised by the composer a number of times into the 1740s . The anonymous text, drawn substantially from the Gospel of John, tells the story of the final period of the life of Jesus Christ leading up to and including the crucifixion.

Stuckings says, "Our Evangelist will be Daniel McMillan - coming all the way from Perth to sing with us)- with soloists Greta Claringbould, Veronica Thwaites-Brown, and Colin Milner."
