NSP left canal modernisation almost complete

Six lakh acres to be irrigated this year, Minister tells Council

The modernisation of Nagarjuna Sagar Project left canal has been completed 95 % and it will irrigate about six lakh acres this year in Nalgonda and Khammam districts, said Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao.

Telangana State stood first in the country in the rating given by the World Bank on modernisation work based on speed, quality of work and results reaching people, he said responding to a query from TRS member Paturi Sudhakar Reddy. The modernisation of NSP canal works would be completed totally by next rainy season, he said.

He assured MIM member Syed Jafri that five tmc of water was kept aside for drinking water requirements of Hyderabad.

On the Telangana’s share of 45 tmc of Godavari water under the Pattiseema project taken up by Andhra Pradesh, the Minister told Mr. Jafri that it was Telangana’s right but the BJP-led Central government did not yet take a decision yet. The matter has been represented to Union Ministers, Krishna River Water Management Board and Central Water Resources department. The State also filed a petition in the Supreme Court against Brijesh Kumar Tribunal for its rights.

Mr. Harish Rao said that under Kalwakurthy project, 27 tmc of water was used this year in Mahabubnagar and water was given for 2.5 lakh acres. He also said that the Detailed Project Report for the Pipri Lift Irrigation scheme on the foreshore of SRSP in Nirmal district was under preparation. In Adilabad district, ₹3,000 crore were being spent on irrigation projects and ₹350 crore was sanctioned to Adilabad district for construction of new tanks under Mission Kakatiya. About 40,000 acres was brought under the tanks ayacut and sanction was also given to Kutti project to benefit Kunthala waterfalls and a GO would be issued in a day or two, he said.
