Cape Town - Cricket Australia's internal investigation has revealed that sandpaper, and not sticky tape, was used by Cameron Bancroft in the Newlands ball-tampering row.

It means that Bancroft, 25, was lying to media when he confessed to ball-tampering on Saturday. 

In an emotional confession after the third day's play, Bancroft acknowledged that he had illegally tampered with the ball, but he said he did so by using sticky tape and rough pieces of ground. 

But Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland confirmed on Wednesday that the sandpaper had been used. 

There was no mention of sandpaper from Bancroft or captain Steve Smith during Saturday's press conference. 

Smith and vice-captain David Warner have been banned from all domestic and international cricket for a year, while Bancroft has received a nine-month ban.

In addition, Sutherland re-iterated that coach Darren Lehmann had nothing to do with the incident and that he would continue to serve out his contract.

All three players were on their way home on Wednesday.
