Report sought on dumping of waste

Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report about medical waste from Kerala being dumped in areas near Valliyoor in Tirunelveli district, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has issued notices to authorities and has sought a report.

The report has been sought from the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, the Director of Town Panchayats, the Tirunelveli District Collector and the Director of Medical and Rural Health Services within four weeks.

According to the media report, medical waste from Kerala was being dumped in quarries near Valliyoor in Tirunelveli district and it posed a danger to pubic health in the area. The Tirunelveli district shares its borders with Kerala.

The report also claimed that the medical waste from Kerala was being dumped in a water body in Veeravanallur near Valliyoor, which has been the main source of irrigation for several acres.
