Why being a daddy's girl is good for you - and makes your dad a better person too

As a hands-on father, Jon Axworthy kicks off his day getting his eight-year-old daughter Annie up and ready for school. He oversees the packing of her school bag, and – thanks to the certificate of proficiency she has awarded him for his excellent ponytail skills – he is also allowed to do her hair.

In the kitchen of their home near Plymouth, his wife Clare usually already has her hands full making breakfast for their sons, Sammy, 9 and Eddie, 14.

But as far as Jon, a 46-year-old writer, is concerned, it’s all hands to the decks.

He has taken Annie to countless pony club meets, waited outside hours of dance classes and been in sole charge at live-action Cinderella shows.
