Over 1.5M USB chargers recalled over shock, fire concerns

Health Canada is recalling over 1.5 million uncertified USB chargers that were found to pose the risk of electrical shock and may cause fires.

The health agency is recalling third-party, uncertified USB chargers that are sold under various manufacturing names.

Health Canada said the recall stems from a national sampling and compliance project, which resulted in the safety warning. The chargers were sold in a number of retail outlets such as dollar stores and gas stations in several provinces. You can view the entire list here. Health Canada said the list may be updated “if and when new products are recalled.”

The health agency is advising consumers who had purchased the recalled product to return the unit to the place of purchase or toss out the product.

Health Canada is reminding consumers to only purchase electrical products that have been certified. Approved products can be identified by a certification stamp on the product itself.
