DeKALB – After a delay in installing fencing around 203 E. Lincoln Highway, demolition of the property originally scheduled for Tuesday has been pushed back, DeKalb economic development planner Jason Michnick said.

The sidewalk in front of the property was blocked off to the public Monday in anticipation of hand demolition efforts, which will attempt to make the building structurally sound enough to bear the weight of additional floors.

Adjacent parking spaces on Second Street also were taped off. Demolition is expected to last about three weeks, according to city documents.

The property, as well as three others on Lincoln Highway, will be redeveloped into a four-story mixed-use building that will contain a specialty grocery store on the first floor and 21 apartment units on the top three floors.

The project, known as Plaza DeKalb, was introduced last year by developer John Pappas, who also is spearheading the nearby Cornerstone project, which is set to open this year. For questions, contact Michnick at 815-748-2365 or jason.michnick@cityofdekalb.com.
