‘Suspicious packages’ sent to CIA and US military facilities

Mar 27, 2018

Officials confirm at least one of the parcels contained ‘explosive’ material

Suspicious packages reportedly containing explosive devices have been discovered at a number of US military and government facilities in and around Washington DC.

More than ten devices were sent, reports CNN, which says they were “very crude, involving black powder, [and] would not have caused fatalities had they gone off”.

The packages were sent to the headquarters of the CIA, the military bases at Fort Belvoir and Fort McNair, as well as a naval support facility in Dahlgren, Virginia.

One package caused the evacuation of Fort McNair, where it later “tested positive for explosive residue”, Reuters says.

“The FBI responded to multiple government facilities today for the reports of suspicious packages. Each package was collected for further analysis by the FBI,” agency spokesman Andrew Ames said.
