Thiruvananthapuram: The wall of GV Raja Stadium, opposite to the
Legislative Assembly complex, was once covered with posters of political parties and other organizations. Now a large painting by artist Ajit Kumar G adorns the wall.
The painting, covering an area of 2,000sq.feet, has transformed the wall into a large canvas.
The painting titled ‘Liberty Bodices’ is the latest addition of art work in the heart of the city, at PMG, as part of Clean City campaign of the city corporation. In the shades of blue and green background, an extended image of a leopard, two primitive people, may not give an impression of any connection with the Legislative Assembly at a glance. At a detailed observation, the two primitive people, disguised as hunters are seen resisting the leopard.
As the title suggests, the artist was inspired by the painting ‘Liberty Leading the People’ by Eugene Delacroix on July Revolution.
It took three days to remove the posters and clean the wall to begin the painting work. The artist chose to work from evening hours to early morning hours when there is less traffic, as there is no footpath along the wall of the busy road.
“All I could see was the Legislative Assembly facing the wall, when I was painting. People had to resist the authoritarian rule to gain liberty, which is the foundation of the Legislative Assembly and also my painting. The leopard being attacked by two people, signify that a collective force is needed to fight the authoritarian rule,” said Ajit Kumar G.
Ajit was assisted by artists Sajimon, Suresh Babu, Prasanth, Sunil Neduveli and Deepu Kumar from Wayanad. tnn
