A man has been airlifted to hospital following a three-vehicle crash which shut a main road.

The casualty was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Stoke University Hospital - a specialist centre for trauma - following the smash on the A539 at Llangollen at around 2.10pm today.

Another person travelling in a separate car, was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital by land ambulance.

No details are available on their condition.

Fire crews, paramedics and police officers were all called to the scene, near the Sun Trevor Hotel.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said they sent a crew from Llangollen and one from Wrexham to the scene to help cut two trapped casualties out of their vehicles.

The ambulance service sent a paramedic in a rapid response car and two emergency ambulances, with crews also supported by the Wales Air Ambulance .

The road, remained closed for a number of hours after the crash, with collision investigators on the scene.
